A suicide bomber, evading police, detonated himself outside a crowded café in Mogadishu's old Hamarweyne district on Tuesday morning, killing at least five people and injuring seven. Somalia Police Spokesperson Maj. Sadik Ali confirmed the attack and casualties.
“At around 11:40am this morning a suicide bomber fleeing from police blew himself outside hotel Al-Hindi in Hamarweyne district. Unfortunately, there were casualties. He killed five people including himself and wounded seven other people. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain his target and motive,” Maj. Ali told the Eastleigh Voice by phone.

The blast was substantial, audible in other parts of Mogadishu. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, marking a violent disruption to the recent period of peace in the capital due to increased security measures.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's administration has been actively combating Al-Shabaab, reclaiming towns in central Somalia. However, the group, affiliated with Al-Qaeda, continues to carry out suicide attacks, disproportionately affecting civilians. The insecurity extends across the border into Kenya, particularly in the North-eastern province bordering Somalia, where Al-Shabaab frequently targets Kenyan security forces.
